Lao Katrina Relief Effort

Hurricane Katrina left the coastal areas of Lousiana in a state of devastation and shock. While reports are still coming in for the estimated count of people who have perished during this disaster, thousands of people have been left homeless and displaced.

There are Lao and Cambodian survivors of Hurricane Katrina, who have taken refuge at Wat Thammarattanaram in New Iberia, LA. Uncertain future hangs over these Katrina survivors. Of these 133 people, 50% of them are children.

Wat Thammarattanaram is working closely with the Laotian Community, the Red Cross, and other organizations to improve and better the lives of these survivors. There is a great need for emergency supplies and more permanent housing for those with no relatives to go to. The wat has a limited space to house the survivors and many of them are taken in by the local Lao families.

Wat Thammarattanaram has set up a relief fund. This fund will support general disaster relief activities including medical care, shelter for those displaced after the hurricane, food, clothing, and other necessity items for the survivors. Your financial contributions allow Wat Thammarattanaram to purchase exactly what Katrina victims need most urgently and to help pay for the utility and other housing expenses. Your donations to Lao Katrina Relief Effort are tax deductible. Wat Thammarattanaram will gladly provide you with a tax receipt upon request.

If you would like to join this effort, you may send monetary donations to Wat Thammarattanaram and earnmark your donation “Lao Katrina Relife Fund”.
